Kotagede has
many meanings. Was built by Ki Ageng Pemanahan in the 16
th century,
Kotagede is the ancestor of Islamic Mataram Kingdom as one of the biggest
kingdom on this country. According to history, Kotegede was chosen as capital
city of Islamic Mataram Kingdom before it
replace to Yogyakarta
Palace (Keraton). Through
long history, Kotagede still has its historic sites all over this place.
Visitors can find and see cemetery complex area of Islamic Mataram Kingdom
founders, Great Mosque (Masjid Gede Mataram), Pasar Legi Kotagede (traditional
market), the ruins of castle and ancient houses and old-structure
villages.

Kotagede is
located in the eastern part of Yogyakarta
city. You can head to Kotagede from 0 km of Yogyakarta
(Malioboro/Gedung Agung/Kraton) for about 7 km ride. Going there while enjoying
the view visitors can take public transport like taxi and trans jogja bus. For
those who want the feel the atmosphere of Yogya can take pedicab or andong
(traditional cart carried by horses with traditional cloth driver). As the
heredity of ancient Islamic Mataram Kingdom, Kotagede has historical sites
becoming alternative object tourism as for cultural tourism in Yogyakarta.

Kotagede has five
main tourism places.
The first block
are Pasar Legi attraction, Alun-alun Gates, Hastorenggo cemetery, Watu Gilang,
Sendhang Seliran, Mataram kings cemetery, Kotagede Mosque, Monggo chocolate
factory, Sidosemi ice stalk, and Pasar Legi shooping center.
The second block are Kotagede enter
gate, Mushola Aisyiah, Museum, and DPRD(representative) pavilion house. Heading
to
third block there are west gate
of Kotagede, Ndalem Sopingan, Pendopo Loring Pasar, Ndalem Prayadanan, Omah
Dhuwur, Ansor Silver and silver crafts activities. Next that is
fourth block includes Makam Bahu
Winangun, Lapangan Karang, Lapangan Karang villages, and Tetenger Jumeneng HB X
footprint. Last,
the fifth block
including simpang pojok Pasar Legi, Sate Waru Doyong, Makam Karanglo and museum.
