Karangtengah Tourism Village |
The forests of Karangtengah village is 15 kilometres south-east of the
city of Yogyakarta,
or 2 kilometres from the tombs of Javanese kings, Imogiri, that was built by
Sultan Agung Hanyokrokusumo in 1645. Its topography is hilly and Imogiri hill
becomes the central. The villagers in Karangtengah were originally far from
prosperous. Living in hilly areas makes it impossible to grow rice especially
when they hardly get enough water. But behind these difficulties there was a
purpose. With the previously reforestation, the land that was critical now
turned into a lush forest and it also is a great potential for the cultivation
of silkworms.

Previously, the villagers of Karangtengah consider silkworms as pests
which cause plants have no leaves so they get rid of them, frying, and then
eating those pests. However, after a study by Prof. Hiromo from Japan,
silkworms which were killed by people were identified as cricula
triphenestrata type and
is the only species in the world that produces golden-colored silk thread.

It seems that
this species lives only in certain habitats and climates, such as in Java. Cricula is a superior species of
silkworms in Java, besides those other species such as Attacus atlas and Antheraea.
By allowing Sultan Ground in Karangtengah, this place was transformed into
silkworm’s colonies. Silkworms which are developed are some kind of wild
silkworms that live in cashew trees, avocado, soursop, mahogany, dadap, and
keben.

Unlike silkworms’
cultivation which is colonized in the room, wild silkworms that live outdoors
are more vulnerable to predators, like ants, birds, and lizards. However, the
resulting is in higher quality. Since living in the wild, they needed larger
area to plant trees where silkworms live in. From 40 hectares of Sultan Ground
in Karangtengah, Garuda Indonesia
airlines agreed to greening on 12 hectares of land by planting 50.000 trees.

For tourists,
this location can also be an alternative if you also visit to the tombs of the
kings in Imogiri. With the development in the tourism sector, not only makes
the forest of Karangtengah more lush but also that the
tourists can witness the breeding of silkworms that live on land that was
originally infertile. Now that location can be turned into a tourism village
that is not less interesting to visit. Moreover, because the wild silkworms Cricula only live in Indonesia and be found in Karangtengah, Bantul,
it should be that the fabric that is produced can bbe the exclusive product of Indonesia.
It may be able to align with international products like Armani and Gucci.

In the
future, in this village will be built laboratories, besides yarn spinning mills
and house of silkworm craft weaving, the inn that was built from wood as well
will be constructed to complement the existing facilities. Karangtengah village
would complete the ‘collection’ of tourist village in Bantul other than Manding
village (leather goods), Kasongan and Pundong (pottery), Banyusumurup (dagger),
and Pendowoharjo (primitive sculpture).
